Career Services and Policies for Companies

Welcome to Career Services of the Jackson School of Geosciences (JSG)  at The University of Texas at Austin!

Career Services can help you develop and benefit from an ongoing recruitment relationship with the JSG. The Career Services office fulfills two complementary functions; preparing students for a successful career search and managing an active on-campus interviewing process.

We greatly appreciate your ongoing commitment to the JSG and look forward to working with you toward our mutual success.

Fall Semester 2008: September 15 through October 31

The JSG Career Services provides on-campus recruiting twice a year, early in the Fall and Spring semesters. Employers may interview students for full-time positions or summer internships. Interview rooms are provided in the Jackson Geosciences Building (JGB) where we provide WiFi internet access, a break room, and refreshments. We also can reserve a room for an information session prior to the interviews.

Currently, JSG students who are interested in our Spring and Fall on-campus interview sessions submit a resume to the Career Services office. Selected resumes, according to the degree sought, are sent via e-mail to each company for review and pre-selection.  After a company notifies the Career Services office of their list of selected students, these students are informed and may come to the office to sign up for an interview time.

You may reserve rooms and times for an Info Session and/or interviews for the Fall 2008 recruiting session by completing our Recruitment Request form and submitting it to careers@geo.utexas.edu. To find out more information about on-campus recruiting at the JSG, contact our Recruiting and Placement Coordinator, Maurine Riess, at 512-232-7673.

We will email all resumes to your designated contact at least one week before the first scheduled interview each semester. We only email resumes of students who are in good standing, students who submitted resumes by the deadline, or students who have submitted their resume for review. For your convenience, Career Services can provide a CD-ROM of resumes at your request. Resumes will be grouped by current degree status of the students (BS/BA, MS/MA, and PhD). International students are required to clearly state their country of origin and visa status on their resume.

Once you have pre-selected candidates for interviews, please email Career Services with the list of student names. Pre-selected students may be contacted either by Career Services or you may contact students directly. Please inform our office of your interview schedule and make Career Services your first point of contact.

Post a Job Announcement

You can e-mail job announcements or mail printed flyers and brochures to  the Career Services office. Job announcements will be posted on our website as soon as it is received. See current job postings here. Please include an application deadline in the job description.

We welcome company technical presentations at the JSG by participation in our seminar series. Most of these are brown-bag events that attract a mix of undergraduates, graduates, and faculty. Almost any technical topic can find a home in one of our seminars. Contact Maurine Riess (mriess@jsg.utexas.edu) for more information.
