The Jackson School of Geosciences Career Center

The JSGCC is here to help you with every step of your job search - whether you need to write a resume, interview for a job, learn about internships, or decide how to best use your geoscience degree. We offer workshops and sponsor events throughout the year to help you accomplish your career goals.

The first step in using our services is to complete your profile on GEO•SOURCE, our online career services system. The GEO•SOURCE login page will guide you through the easy process for students at the Jackson School in 2008-2009. Alumni who want to register for our online services need to call the JSG Career Center first. Once logged in to GEO•SOURCE, you may complete your profile, use your personal calendar to keep up with current events, upload your resume, search for jobs and internships, apply for jobs, and schedule an on-campus interview.

Who May Register and Use Our Services

Our services are available to all current Jackson School of Geosciences students in good standing who are looking for summer internships, part-time jobs, or full-time employment following graduation. Our services are also available to our alumni for free. Contact the JSG Career Center for details.

Events and Workshops

The online calendar is the best way to keep informed of events sponsored by the JSGCC. You can view the calendar anytime by clicking here or on any of the Events Calendar icon on the main Careers & Opportunities page.

GEO•SOURCE

GEO•SOURCE is our updated online career services system where students and employers benefit from online access to profiles, resumes, interview scheduling, event RSVP's and generally facilitate communication with each other. Please contact the JSGCC at careers@geo.utexas.edu or Maurine Riess at 512-232-7673 for more information on registering and using GEO•SOURCE.

JSGCC Policies

The On-Campus Interview Process

The Resume Writing Process

Individual companies determine whether they will interview and hire international students who are not eligible to work full-time in the United States. All international students are required to include their visa status and country of origin on their resume. International students may click here for some FAQ's on working in the United States (provided by The International Office of The University of Texas at Austin).

All current JSG undergraduate and graduate students will be placed on the geo_opportunities UTlist so that they will receive e-mail notifications of recruiting events, company visits, employment opportunities, scholarship availability, and academic and research funding opportunities.

Back to previous

All students are expected to complete the recruiting exit survey at the end of each semester. Students may complete the survey online on GEO•SOURCE or they may contact the Career Center at  careers@geo.utexas.edu for an email copy.

Jackson School of Geosciences Career Center policies and guidelines have been created to protect you, the JSG student, as well as to facilitate recruiting activities with our employers. To that end, we require all students registering with our office to acknowledge and agree with the terms of our JSGCC Registration Agreement once the online system is available.

The On-Campus Interview Process

Job postings that come to the JSG Career Center through are posted in two places. On these web pages, the Current Job Postings (full-time, part-time, and internships) and the Funding Opportunities (scholarships, higher education and research positions) web pages are available for viewing by anyone visiting our web pages. Reminders of new opportunities are sent via email to all students on the geo_opportunities email list.  Opportunities are also posted on bulletin boards in the Jackson Geosciences Building (JGB). The board for undergraduates is located across from GEO/JGB 2.318 and the board for graduate students is located outside GEO/JGB 5.306.

Employers who are actively seeking to fill positions and taking applications can register with GEO•SOURCE, our online system, to post jobs, view student resumes, and schedule on-campus interviews.

Back to previous

JSG students may upload their resume to GEO•SOURCE after completing their online profile. The resume will be held in a pending file until approved by the JSG Career Center. Students may elect to allow employers to view their resume for their interview pre-selection process for on-campus interviews. Look for the JSGCC Workshops during the semester, Walk-in Resume Reviews, or make an appointment with the JSGCC to review your resume. Call or email the JSGCC office: 512-232-7673 or careers@geo.utexas.edu.

Companies usually choose one of two types of interview sign-up methods:

  • Pre-select (most common)
  • Open sign-up

Pre-selected Students. After reviewing all of the resumes online, the company will notify the students they wish to interview. If you receive notice that you have been pre-selected, you may select a suitable time slot from the interview schedule for that job and company online.

If you have been pre-selected for an interview, but do not wish to interview with that company, you may decline to interview. If you are unable to interview due to scheduling conflicts, please call or come by the Career Center to discuss your options.

Open Sign-up. In this situation, a company will interview any qualified student who signs up for an interview. Companies may specify graduate students only, or only students who are eligible to work in the United States.

Back to previous

If for any reason you cannot keep your scheduled interview, please advise the Career Center as soon as possible. If you fail to appear for a scheduled interview without prior notice to either the Career Center or the recruiting company representative, you will be required to write a letter of apology to the recruiter. Further arrangements with the recruiting company will be up to you.

  • Many companies now require students to complete an online application on the corporate web site prior to the on-campus interview. Be sure to check the job description and application requirements for each job and interview online.
  • Bring a copy of your resume and your transcript to every interview.
  • Dress in business attire and arrive 5 minutes early for your interview.
  • Attend as many information sessions as you can.
  • Ask the recruiter for a business card, and write him or her a thank-you note afterward. A hand-written note is the most effective and memorable way to help them remember you.

  • View or review the online Interview Skills PowerPoint presentation found under "Workshop Presentations" on the left-side menu of this page.

The Resume Writing Process

All students who participate in recruiting activities should plan to attend resume and interview workshops that are offered each semester.  The Resume Workshop PowerPoint presentation (pdf format) is always available if you cannot come to a workshop. One-on-one assistance is also available by making an appointment with the JSGCC or coming by the office during a "Walk-In Resume Review" day.

Please name your resume using the following filename format:

LastName_Degree_Major.doc

Example: Riess_MS_Geophysics.doc

  • Your resume should show the recruiter that you have the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

  • You should demonstrate a broad base of fundamental geological knowledge.

  • Education and experience rank above extracurricular activities, but may be included if volunteer work is the best example of your work ethic.

  • Include information about your race, marital status, your SSN, or your photo.

  • Don’t allow any grammatical or typographical errors.

  • Don’t put your entire life history into your resume. Take the time to craft a useful, brief, yet informative document.

Professional society directories are a useful source of names, addresses, and affiliations. Company websites can give you basic information about the company corporate structure and activities. The List of Recruiters page includes links to many of the companies that recruit on-campus each year.

Info Sessions offered by each company during the recruiting seasons offer an up-to-date picture of their technical activities. You are strongly encouraged to attend as many Info Sessions as you can, especially if you will be interviewing with that company. Info Sessions may be scheduled over the noon hour or in the evening, and may be located in the JGB building, combined with engineering students in one of the engineering buildings, or off-campus, usually at a local restaurant.

Need help writing your resume? A list of power/action verbs can be found here to assist you in writing the experience and accomplishment sections of your resume. There are many fine web resources on resume writing, but much of the work researching has been done for you. Visit the Resume Workshop, Interview Workshop or Cover Letter Writing Workshop before you spend much time web-searching. Career Services is here to assist you. You may also come by JGB 2.114D for personalized one-on-one help with your career search needs.
