1.

Changes to documents in ArcCatalog don't show up in ArcMap, or don't show up, even upon "refreshing", in ArcCatalog.

Symptom:
Files moved or pasted in ArcCatalog, or files that have their properties (e.g. Spatial reference) modified, don't immediate show these changes.

Solution:
When ArcCatalog does not immediately show changes to files or folders (it rarely does for me), the nominal solution is to Refresh the view (using View>Refresh, or the F5 key).  This often has no perceptible effect; you still cannot see your new file or the changes you've made!  It will usually work, however, if you will collapse the catalog tree and/or collapse the folder that contains the changes before Refreshing.

When ArcMap cannot find a file or detect changes to a file's properties that you recently added or modified in ArcCatalog, do the following:

  • Remove the file from ArcMap
  • Go back to ArcCatalog and follow the procedure above until you can see the file or changes in ArcCatalog.
  • Add the file again to ArcMap.  It should now show the changes.
  • If the problem persists, save your work, exit both programs and try again. This will always solve the problem, but it's time consuming and rarely necessary if you use the procedures above.
