Overview:

The goal of this course is to understand the fundamental processes controlling organic-contaminant fate and transport in hydrogeologic systems. We first review (briefly) some basic organic chemistry, then examine specific chemical and biological processes that control the fate of organic compounds in aqueous systems. Finally, we will integrate the tools and processes in individual research topics. This year the course will focus on biodegradation processes and subsurface microbial ecology, volatilization and vapor-phase transport, dissolution and solubility, and hydrolysis.
