Hydroclimatology Field Trip

The J-17 Eddy Flux Tower, Austin, Texas The eddy flux tower provides measurements of evapotranspiration (ET). Together with the measurements of rainfall and streamflow, the ET data will be used to estimate the groundwater recharge based on surface water balance.

  • The J-17 site is ~15 miles southwest of UT campus.

  • It is adjacent to the Wildflower Center, but  to the south.

  • The tower provides eddy-covariance measurements of latent heat flux and sensible heat flux, as well as measurements of net radiation, relative humidity, wind, and temperature.

  • There are also measurements of soil heat flux, and soil temperature.

  • The field trip was organized for Dr. Yang's hydroclimatology class to provide the students an opportunity to observe how the hydrometeorological data are collected. The trip was made on April 27, 2004, and the tour was guided by Mr. Nico Hauwert (Hydrogeologist, Watershed Protection and Development Review Department, City of Austin) and Dr. Marcy Litvak (Section of Integrative Biology at UT).

  • All the photos below were taken by Dr. Yang.
