Field Trip #3: Paleozoic Carbonates, Llano Uplift

I. OBJECTIVES:

• Identify lithostratigraphic units in a sequence of Paleozoic carbonate rocks in a cut bank of the Pedernales River.
• Measure and describe the same.
• Measure and plot the orientation of cross beds in Cambrian Hickory sandstone near Enchanted Rock State Park.

II. WHEN:

• March 2 or 3.

We depart from the east basement entrance.
Trips will return to Austin by about 6 PM.

IV. BACKGROUND MATERIAL

• Lab Manual, and Lab 2 and 5.

• Read the write-up entitled "The Llano Uplift" and examine the first two figures that follow it.

• The Paleozoic history of central Texas is described in the University Students Geological Societies "Guidebook to the Geology of Travis County".

• See a highly generalized geologic map of the Llano uplift region.
