Job Posting for Assistant Professor (Tenure Track)

Exploration Geophysics

Dept of Geological Sciences
Jackson School of Geosciences
University of Texas at Austin

The Department of Geological Sciences of the Jackson School of Geosciences is searching for a tenure track assistant professor in Exploration Geophysics. A PhD supporting our educational and research efforts in Exploration Geophysics is required at the time of appointment. Fulfillment of this position is part of our ongoing initiative to establish The University of Texas at Austin as a premier program in exploration geophysics. Most graduates of this program enter careers in the petroleum exploration and production industry.

The successful candidate will teach both graduate and undergraduate courses and will attract graduate students to the Exploration Geophysics program. Although the Jackson School initiative has attractive start-up funding, the successful candidate is expected to attract research funding needed to help maintain a major education and research program in exploration geophysics.

Opportunities for collaboration and potential joint appointments with research units of the Jackson School of Geosciences (UT Institute of Geophysics [UTIG] and the Bureau of Economic Geology [BEG]) are available. Collaboration with these and other UT-Austin entities, such as the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences [ICES], Texas Advanced Computing Center [TACC], and the Dept of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering [PGE] offer even greater breadth to the exploration geophysics program at UT. Interaction with these groups is expected. The Dept of Geological Sciences is one of the leading institutions in soft-rock geology and sedimentology, and continuous interaction among faculty members offers opportunities for collaboration.

Consideration of applications will commence January 1, 2009 and continue until the position is filled. Appointment may begin as early as the Fall 2009 academic term.

Please send CV, statement of research and teaching interests, selected reprints and names and addresses of at least three references to: Chair, Exploration Geophysics Search Committee, Dept of Geological Sciences C1100, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX 78712-1101, USA..
