Three-dimensional quantitative textural analysis of metamorphic rocks using high-resolution computed X-ray tomography: Part II. Application to natural samples
Cambria Denison and William D. Carlson

The first section contains grayscale and pseudocolor three-dimensional reconstructions of a garnetiferous quartzite (PM1), a garnetiferous metagabbro (WR4), a garnet-kyanite schist (MD), a garnet-staurolite schist (CLD), and a garnetiferous calc-silicate (BMT).

In the second section, flattened quick-time animations of samples MD and CLD are available to download.

3D animations of natural rock samples

Click on image to download a flattened quick-time movie. Please be forewarned that the animations are between 2 and 3 megs; they may take a while to download. You will need a helper application capable of playing .MOV animation files working with your browser in order to view the animations. There are many available as freeware and shareware; for Macintosh, Fast Player, Simple Player or Sparkle work well. Sparkle is available through the University of Texas shareware/freeware graphics archive; alternatively, Sparkle and Fast Player are available at an anonymous NCSA ftp site. Although they have not been tested with these animations, suitable viewers for Windows and UNIX machines may be available at this NCSA site.

Sample MD

A leaf-through of MD CT scans (2.1 MB).

A 3D animation seqentially slicing from the back to the front of the sample (2.7 MB).

Sample CLD

A leaf-through of CLD CT scans (3.4 MB).

A 3D animation simulating an expanding 'box' volume (2.7 MB).
