Professor Omar Ghattas
Professor and John A. and Katherine G. Jackson Chair in Computational Geosciences
Director, Center for Computational Geosciences
Ph.D., Duke University, 1988

Field of Study:
Computational geosciences, inverse problems, parallel supercomputing

Short Biography:
Dr. Ghattas' interests are in forward and inverse modeling, and optimal design and control, of complex systems in the geological, mechanical, and biomedical engineering sciences, with particular emphasis on large-scale simulations on parallel supercomputers. Geoscience inverse problems of current interest include those in regional and global seismic wave propagation, mantle convection, atmospheric and subsurface contaminant transport, ocean dynamics, and flow in porous media.

In addition to the Department of Geological Sciences, Dr. Ghattas holds appointments in the
Institute for Geophysics, the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, and the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Computer Sciences, and Biomedical Engineering. Prior to September 2005, he was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his BS, MS, and PhD from Duke University in 1984, 1986, and 1988, respectively. He has been a visiting professor at NASA-Langley Research Center, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories. He was awarded the 2003 Gordon Bell Prize for Special Accomplishment in Supercomputing.
