Guerrero Dr. Stephen Grand Requirements for the M.A. Degree with ReportMA with Report Degree Option This degree option is designed for students who have been working professionals and seek coursework to enhance their technical knowledge. The expectation is that this degree will be completed in three semesters. Students in this degree option are not eligible to be a Teaching Assistant. The requirements for the MA with Report degree option are: 1) One of the MA with Report degree options must be declared in the application for admission. Currently the following programs exist:
2) For admission, a faculty member in the Department of Geological Sciences must be identified who will supervise the preparation of the required report. 3) A minimum of 30 credit hours of course work is required (requirements for degree options may vary) with at least 24 hours at the graduate level and at least 15 hours of course work in Geological Sciences (GEO). 4) A written technical "Master's Report" worth 3 hours of credit (GEO 398R) must be prepared, evaluated and approved by a report committee consisting of three faculty members (supervisor and two other faculty members). This report is generally based upon a synthesis of library research of a subject approved by the report supervisor. Original work involving field studies or collection of basic data may be part of the report. No more than one summer or one semester is to be devoted to production and evaluation of the report. 5) The Departmental degree requirement is that all coursework including the final approval of the report must be completed before six semesters have elapsed. MA with Report in Hydrogeology The MA with Report in Hydrogeology is designed for persons who have substantial professional work experience in the hydrology and environmental geology field. Required Core Courses - 19 hours Optional Courses must total at least 12 hours. Optional Course List #1 - up to 6 hours (select up to two) GEO 382F Fractured Rock Hydrology and Mechanics Optional Course List #2 - at least 6 hours (select at least two) CE 380S Environmental Fluid Mechanics Free Elective - 3 hours Select 3 hours of courses at upper-division or graduate level in any UT Department. MA with Report in Petroleum Geology The MA with Report in Petroleum Geology is designed for persons who have substantial professional work experience in the oil and gas exploration and development. Required Core Courses - 18 hours GEO 383 Depositional Systems: Terrigenous Clastics Optional Course List - 9 hours (select at least three) GEO 383L Petrography of Sandstones Free Electives - 6 hours Select at least 6 hours of upper-division or graduate level courses in UT Department(s) other than GEO. |
