OverviewDonated by Mobil in 1992, the D500 provides routine, non-quantitative mineral identification in rock powders. The system was upgraded in the spring of 2002 and again in 2006. The D500 is now driven by DataScan automation software (MDI) with integrated pattern analysis by JADE 7+ (MDI) using the ICDD Minerals database.
TrainingSamplesSamples for XRD must be carefully ground rock powders (no gritty lumps) or fine size fractions separated by centrifugation or gravity settling. Ideally, the mineral phases of interest should be present in amounts of at least several percent. Otherwise, some method of concentrating the phase will be necessary.
