Scientist
Area of Expertise: Geochronology
Short
Biography:
Dr.
McDowell received a Ph. D from Columbia
University in 1966. Following a two and
one-half year post-doctoral appointment
at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology,
he came to the University of Texas at
Austin in 1969. Here he established a
potassium-argon dating facility that has
been in operation for about 30 years.
This facility has been utilized extensively
in collaborative geologic studies conducted
both within and outside of the Department
of Geological Sciences. It has also been
critical to Dr. McDowells long-term
interest in the magmatic history of western
Mexico and adjacent areas of the southwestern
United States. In recent years, Dr. McDowell
has expanded his interest to include utilizing
U-Pb geochronology and isotope geochemistry
to examine older magmatic arcs and the
basement domains of northern Mexico, as
described below.
