My name is Nick Freidberg and the past year I have served as President Elect, following and learning the role of president.  If you vote for me there will be a smooth transition into the president role with proven leadership.  I have many connections for speakers, field trips, and parties.  I plan to increase under-class involvement through promotion in classes, and I have some innovative ideas for the UGS club, come to the election day meeting to hear more.

Steven Gohlke

"Having the honor of serving as the Jackson School’s Student
Government Representative during the past year has taught me crucial
aspects of student leadership, advocacy, and collaboration that I
would like to share with the Undergraduate Geology Society as
President over the coming year. My experience has granted me access
to valuable resources ranging far and wide both inside and outside of
the Jackson school, which I feel distinguishes me as a candidate for
the position.

My primary goal, if elected, is to maximize these resources that are
available in order to reach out and involve as many students as
possible in UGS meetings, events, and help increase awareness among
our student body about how to succeed as an earth science student of
any kind, while still having fun in the process.

Most importantly, I would like to leave a lasting legacy behind for
future students and help continue to facilitate the development of the
Jackson School’s strong identity by taking another giant leap towards
rivaling the capabilities of much larger schools and I ask for your
support in helping accomplish this goal."

Frank Morgan

As an honors student in the Jackson School I have realized my passion for geology and I?d like to share this passion with my fellow undergrads. I believe my leadership skills and intelligence will allow me to take UGS to a level unknown to man. My objective is to create an undergraduate geological society that emphasizes learning and fun so that people are excited every week to participate in meetings and events. I plan on laying the groundwork for a more productive and coordinated organization that will unite all grades into a cohesive geologic family.

Vice-President:

Kara Dias

I am a very personable, organized, and up beat person.  If you’ve ever been in a class with me, you’ve seen that I not only get the job done, but I enjoy doing it (for the most part).  I love getting to know people and make it a goal of mine to learn something from each person that I meet.  More to the point, these personality traits have rendered me very close to the students, teachers, and staff of the Jackson School.  They helped me be able to be involved campus wide, and this past year I served as senate representative for the Jackson School.  They have led me to participate in the enjoyable and stimulating conversations hosted by POSSE.  They have even let me be loud and proud about my love for rocks!   I am fully aware of the responsibilities of the Vice President of UGS, and wish for nothing else than to assume them and serve you, the student.   I think my relationship to the school is the source of my intrinsic desire to give back – I simply feel that I’ve been given too much for too little already.  So please vote for me.

Thad Bay

Coming from a strong geologic background and having extensive leadership and communication capabilities, I believe I have a lot to contribute to the undergraduates in the Jackson School. I have great ideas for the future of the UGS and these ideas will involve all grades in a fun, energetic and positive environment. The UGS is a great way to experience the wonders of geology and my goal is to effectively communicate this to all students. Through sufficient planning and coordination, I plan to make the UGS a haven for creative expression of the joys of geology.

Secretary:

Tso Hau

Hi. My name is Michael Tso and I am a sophomore majoring GEH. I am currently working in Dr. Marc Hesse's research group, focusing on the fluid properties of CO2 currents. I am also the current secretary and vice-president-elect of the Hong Kong Student's Association. I have been working as a secretary for many organizations and I am very familiar to deal communication issues within and outside an organization. I will make sure everyone get informed about our events promptly and I will respond to any questions about our activities as soon as possible. I will also keep our minutes updates online to maintain UGS's transparency.

I have played IM flag football, volleyball and basketball this year. So I am looking forward to playing with you guys on the court!

Jessica Hinojosa

I am interested in running for secretary for UGS. I would very much like to be more involved with UGS and believe I would make an excellent secretary. I am very responsible, countable, and am able to make all meetings. I take excellent notes and would be superb at recording minutes! I am eager to help spread the word about UGS via email, electronic screens in the JGB, and by word of mouth. I look forward to the upcoming school year and all that UGS has to offer!

Cassie O'Connor

I’m Cassie O’Connor and I will be a Junior majoring in General Geology next year. I believe that I would be an excellent UGS secretary because of my organizational skills and desire to increase interest in UGS among Jackson School students. I have been involved in UGS since my freshman year and can think of no better way that I can serve the organization than to serve as secretary for the 2010-2011 school year. I feel that most issues that UGS encounters are associated with either miscommunication or a lack of communication, through taking minutes at meetings and sending out those annoying mass emails (please, don’t just send them to your junk folder, UGS loves you!), I would help to improve the organization through strengthening its communication network.

Senate Representative:

Benjamin Bass

I am running because I would like to give a voice to every student in the Geology school. Every student attending the Jackson school should know about the Senate meetings progress so that they will be able to amend or address any issues or ideas they have. I would like to be the person that relays information between the Senate and the students of the Jackson school because I am friendly and confident in my listening, organizational, and communicative skills. I hope to create a friendly and active connection between the Senate and the Student body in order to foster progressive goals beneficial to all.

Liyana Rafiuddin

I’m Liyana and I am a junior this year. I am working under the Deep Shelf Gas Project at the Bureau of Economic Geology and aspire to become a petroleum geologist. I’m running for this position simply because I want to serve and represent my fellow undergraduates in the Senate as well as play a role in the university community!

Social Chair:

Daniel Valencia

As social chair my ultimate goal is to bring forth the outgoing nature of incoming and current undergraduate students that can’t be shared during classes. I want to organize events at the beginning of the semesters so that new classmates have the opportunity to meet each other in a leisure, social atmosphere. I would like to organize events that students look forward to attending every year. I want people to be able to create social networks that they will carry with them throughout their lives. I am a genuinely outgoing, charismatic person and I am very easy to approach. This is why I know I would excel in this position.

Evan Wagner

I want to run for social officer. I've been to plenty of UGS functions and I can bring some new ideas to the table. I've helped organize parties for other organizations and I would be more involved than previous social officers. I'm flexible and if anyone has any good ideas i will try to make it happen.

Brandon Okafor

After you graduate from the Jackson School of Geological Sciences, you will always remember the wonderful times you spend with your friends and all the crazy things you did at that specific time. As your UGS social chair, I would like to help you build these memories. I want to create events that will not only bring everyone(undergrads, grads, facutly, and staff) together, but help us come together as a community or family. I want to come up with events that are not only cherished by a few, but by everyone in the UGS family. I want to come up with events that you will talk about when you are old enough to retire. Thank you for your consideration and time.

Philanthropy Chair:

Anine Pedersen

I would like to be UGS's Philanthropy chair because I am passionate about volunteering. I believe that volunteering your time and energy not only benefits the people you are helping but it also has a very positive impact on your own life. I have extensive experience organizing events through other organizations that I have been active in and would love the opportunity to become more involved in UGS and serve as philanthropy chair.

Sophomore Liason:

Camellia Onn

Hi! My name is Camellia and I would like to represent the sophomore class next year. Since our freshman year is coming to an end, I hope that us sophomores-to-be would start getting pumped up for the more challenging classes to come. I want to assist and help the sophomore class get involved with the UGS and the Jackson school. I would also try to collaborate with upperclassmen and the incoming freshman class next fall so we can be informed of opportunities and activities for us to join. Fellow sophomores, we will work together to come up with interesting ideas and activities so we can get to know one another better. Vote for me!

Han Kyul Kyra Kim

Hi! I am Kyra, and I would like to represent our sophomore class and become the connecting bond. Everyone has worked really hard this year, and now I would like to transfer that energy to the upcoming freshmen class, while assisting the sophomores to keep up and blossom in their next chapter of academic success. If given this position I would most like to promote bonding within the class to develop into a more solidified community, with creative ideas that fit the class specifically such as pursuing study sessions for major classes or organizing fun small-group oriented activities. I will also communicate effectively with other classes and the geology society. I am motivated to listen to everyone’s ideas. Let’s strengthen the sophomore class inside out!

Media Relations:

Daniel Reyes

I want to run for the Media Relations officer position because I feel that I can contribute greatly. I am very outgoing and I am always interested in being involved in activities with other fellow geologists. I have experience with computers so I can run the website as well as experience with cameras. I think that if chosen, I will do my best to show the members of UGS and also any other person in the Jackson School of Geosciences what it is that we do, meaning, Ill put up pictures of field trips, take pictures of classes (not just mine but others too), faculty, and other events.
