Pre-Rincon Volcanic Stratigraphy
QTat, Qmt, Qgf

A) Contact between the Miravalles tuff (upper) and Liberia tuff (lower) exposed along the Bagaces-Miravalles highway. The Miravalles tuff (Qmt) was erupted from the Guayabo caldera at approximately 0.6 Ma. The tuff, which outcrops south and east of the map area, filled in hilly topography developed on the Liberia tuff (Qlt) and thickens gradually toward the Guayabo caldera. At least three cooling units of the Miravalles tuff have been documented (Protti, 1988).

B) Caldera-fill ignimbrite deposit (Qgf) exposed along the road connecting haciendas Guachipelin and Rincon de la Vieja. This is the youngest ignimbrite deposit observed in the study area - at present, no age determinations for this unit have been made.

C) Boulders and cobbles incorporated into the widespread QTat lava flow. This flow is exposed over several kilometers in the study area, especially along the Rio Blanco before its confluence with the Rio Colorado. Locally, the flow incorporated unconsolidated river deposits - with lava forming the matrix between individual boulders / cobbles.
