The laboratory is an essential aspect of this course, because these sessions provide additional time for discussion and illustration of complex topics, as well as providing "hands-on" experience with maps and samples. General geologic topics are reviewed with a focus on relevance to Texas, including geologic time, geologic maps, mineralogy, magmatism, metamorphism, and sedimentation. Topics with a particular Texas focus include fossils, salt domes, and volcanism. Uses of mineral commodities, geologic controls on their origin, and methods of discovery and economic evaluation are reviewed.
