Geo 335 - Geology & Mineral Resources of Texas

Requirements

Prerequisites for Geology 335 are introductory courses in physical geology and historical geology. At the University of Texas at Austin, these correspond to Geology 303, 401, or 312K AND Geology 404 or 405. However, above average performance in a single introductory geology course and willingness to spend extra study time will be considered as acceptable background.

Who should take this course? Although Geology 335 serves as an upper division elective for the Bachelor of Science Option IV and for the Bachelor of Arts in Geological Sciences, the course is designed for, and principally is taken by, students who are not majors in Geological Sciences. The course may be used with other geology courses to satisfy the basic science requirement of the University. It is an applicable course in the certification program required for teaching earth science in Texas public schools. Geology 335 typically is taken as an elective by students with interests in geology, geography, and resource economics, as well as those with a general interest in Texas.

The following suggestions are offered for best performance in the course. Students should attend every lecture and lab; this is particularly essential because of the lack of an ideal textbook for the course. Read appropriate sections in the Geology 335 Course Notes before each lecture and the introductory materials before each lab. Roadside Geology of Texas (Spearing, 1991) contains valuable information about Texas geology and mineral resources and is recommended as a supplement for the course. Practical Petroleum Geology (Morris et al., 1985) contains a brief review of general geologic principles, as well as information on petroleum geology, engineering, and economics. Read any reserve materials in the Walter Geology Library. Start to review lecture and lab materials well before each exam.

Grading is based on two intrasemester exams, unscheduled lecture quizzes, a research paper, lab exercises and tests, and a final exam.
