If you would’ve asked me where I was going to be the summer of 2009 Turkey would’ve never crossed my mind. The NSF-IRES program gave me an opportunity to explore a place that many will never encounter in their lives. The amazing variation in landscapes and geologic features was breathtaking. We got to see tectonics at its best, the Menderes Massif, North Anatolian Fault, and so much more. We were also able to observe some of the highest pressure-temperature rocks found on earth’s surface. Field work was a blast, there is so much there that us Okie’s never get the chance to see. We are surrounded by sedimentary rocks and to come face to face with an ophiolite is incredible.

Along with the wonderful geology, we were able to experience some culturally significant sites and see remnants of ancient civilizations. Personally this was a dream come true, I have studied these places in text books but I never thought I would get the opportunity to see it. Turkey has such a rich history; we were able to visit many different exhibits including the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and the beloved Ataturk’s mausoleum.

Besides all of the knowledge and culture gained from this experience I also gained something much more personal, I gained amazing friends. I was unsure of what to expect of the people in Turkey and was pleasantly surprised, everyone was very welcoming and loving. My insecurities soon melted away and an extremely close relationship ensued (there was plenty of Turkish dancing and language lessons). Along with the friendships that I have with the other students a closeness was established with the professors also. Now I’m trying to get them to come here and experience our culture and food!.

Everything about this experience was nothing but amazing, I wouldn’t change a thing. The memories and experiences I have from this trip will last for a lifetime.
