Ms. Nilay Yagcioglu , Middle East Technical University, undergraduate

When I applied to this project, I had not thought that it would be such a perfect summer for me! The NSF-IRES program was a great chance for me to learn about geology and more. I learned many many things about geology. During the project, we worked about many branches of geology such as structural geology, petrography, geophysics, engineering geology and so far. I improved my knowledge which I learned during my second year. Also, before taking structural geology and geophysics courses, I learned many things about them in the field. Most importantly, I learned field geology which is really important for a geological engineer. During the project, we visited many sites in Turkey. In Sivrihisar, we discovered perfect granites, in Afyon, we climbed to Afyon Castle which has 800 stairs! We got a great chance to see all geologic structures from the top of the castle. Also, we examined the rock fall in Afyon Castle. In Denizli, we worked about faults. In Aydın, we worked in Menderes Massif. In Kula, we saw the youngest volcanic activity zone in Turkey. In conclusion, I gained a great experience about geology by taking part in this project and I got a great chance to work with perfect professors from US and Turkey.

Of course, the project was not about just geology. I met new people from US and got new friendships. During the project, we were always together and we spent lots of time. We visited historical places. They learned about Turkish culture, tasted delicious Turkish foods. They liked Turkey and Turkish food a lot and it was so pleasurable for me. The time I spent with my friends and professors during the project was so amazing that I hope to meet them again, but this time not in Turkey, in US! I will never forget this summer. Thanks to everyone participated in this project and thanks to NSF!
