Turkey was a wonderful
experience for me. Not only did I get to learn how to conduct fieldwork and
about geology in general, I got to travel to a country that I never dreamed of
going to before I applied for the trip. Meeting new people, learning about the
Turkish culture and language, and being able to see spectacular sites and
landscapes make for a great adventure.
I adjusted to the food, climate, and time change with no problems. I expected it
to be milder than it was; therefore, I brought too much heavy clothing (such as
long sleeve shirts and cardigans). Although clothing must be modest, I would
suggest bringing short sleeve shirts. Two of my pairs of shoes broke, so be sure
to bring reliable, comfortable shoes.
I am so grateful that I got to be a part of this experience. I would encourage
anyone who likes to travel for a longer period of time to apply. Turkey is a
great country to travel to even if it is your first time to travel outside of
your home country. The geology is fascinating and you will benefit educationally
and personally from the trip.
