Spring Semester, 2005
Welcome to GEO 381R! This site is designed to introduce a graduate course at the University of Texas at Austin on Regional Studies in Mineral Resources Geology taught by Richard Kyle. which for Spring Semester 2005 most likely will focus on the Geologic Evolution and Mineral Resource Development of Southwestern North America. The plan for the Spring 2005 GEO 381R offering is being developed at present, but likely will consist of a course focused on the geology and non-energy mineral resources of the Great Basin, concluding with an ~2 week field course in Nevada and adjacent states immediately after classes in early May. A key component is participation in the Geological Society of Nevada Window to the World symposium in Reno from May 15-18 (see www.gsn2005.org/). This meeting is arguably the most important economic geology-focused meeting to be held in North America in a several year period. The meeting provides a unique opportunity to learn of the latest developments in exploration and research. Given the current high level of activity in the global minerals industry, the meeting also affords those with mineral industry career interests to develop the industry contacts that might allow these career interests to be fulfilled.
After
you examine the website information, please contact the instructor if you have
any questions or comments at rkyle@mail.utexas.edu.
Consent of instructor is required to enroll in this course and
participate in the field trip.
There also may be an opportunity to participate in a field trip in early April with students in Jim Gardner's volcanology course (GEO 391) that might include the examination of selected volcanic-associated mineralization systems in Trans-Pecos Texas.
I anticipate that the webpage will be updated regularly during the semester, so check it often for latest developments. Because of the evolving plans, including the duration, timing, and specific sites for the Spring 2005 trip, many of the sections on the website have not been updated, i.e. they represent relevant materials for the last 381R offering on the Geology and Minerals Resources of Western Australia (see past GEO 381R section below). Traditionally the required field trip for GEO 381R has been after the Spring Semester (although overlapping to varying degrees with the Final Exam period). The course structure and assignments will be designed once the collective field trip plans have been decided, likely during the first week of classes.
To make navigation easy, reduce load time, and allow for future expansion, Geo 381R has been subdivided by topic. Please click on the topic of interest. For example, if you would like to read the course syllabus, click on the syllabus name or the volcano button.
