Multiphase geosystems groupOur research centers on mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of multiphase systems in the Earth and Environmental sciences. Our focus is on flow, deformation, reaction, and phase change in inherently multi-phase porous media that are ubiquitous in natural systems. To integrate observations from currently separate fields we focus on the underlying physical and chemical processes rather than the particular geological phenomenon. Our aim is to make significant contributions to several problems of environmental as well as fundamental interest in the Earth and Environmental sciences. Multi-phase systems in the Earth sciences include: partial melting in the Earth's upper mantle, glacial hydrogeology, diagenesis, metasomatism, and weathering.
Multi-phase systems in the
Environmental sciences include: CO2 storage, CH4/CO2 hydrates, geothermal energy, and
enhanced oil recovery. We have recently joined the Center for Frontiers in Subsurface Energy Security (CFSES), a large DOE funded collaboration between UT Austin and Sandia National Laboratories to study geological CO2 and nuclear waste storage. |
