μ-Automatic Sample Handler

This box allows us to do our work.  It protects the sensitive equipment and samples to be measured from the earth's magnetic field.  Remember that a sample can take a secondary field while waiting to be measured.  This room "blocks" or diverts the earth's field so that anything inside will be safe from being remagnetized.  If you were to bring a compass inside the room it would not point north!

Both inside and outside of the room a specially heat-treated layer of nickel, iron, copper, and molybdenum alloy redirects the field lines around almost like oil floats on top of water.  This special metal is called μ-metal.
